A man from Kindah named Imru al-Qays bin Abis brought a dispute against a man from Hadramawt before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning a piece of land. The Messenger ruled that the Hadrami had to produce evidence, but he had none, so he ruled that Imru al-Qays must take an oath. The Hadrami said, "Messenger of Allah, if you let him take the oath, then by Allah, by the Lord of the Kaabah, my land is gone."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears a false oath in order to seize the property of his brother by it will meet Allah while He is angry with him."Raja said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then recited, "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price" [Aal Imran 3:77].Imru al-Qays asked, "What is there for one who relinquishes it, Messenger of Allah?"He answered, "Paradise."Imru al-Qays said, "Then bear witness that I have relinquished all of it to him."
The isnad is sahih. Adi bin Adi bin Umayrah was a trustworthy jurist who served as Umar bin Abdul-Aziz's governor over Mosul, and his hadith appears in Sahih Muslim. Urs bin Umayrah is among the trustworthy successors, though some say he was a companion. The hadith was narrated by Bukhari, 8/167, Shu'b edition, in the chapters on faith and vows, "the covenant of Allah" ﷺ, with similar wording, and by Tabarani in Al-Kabir, 17/138, number 341, with the same wording, and by Bayhaqi, 10/44. Haythami said, 4/178, "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and their narrators are trustworthy."
