Ali bin Abdullah bin Abbas came to us during one of those pilgrimage seasons, and I heard him say, "My father Abdullah bin Abbas told me, on the authority of his father Abbas, that he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I am your uncle. My years have grown long and my appointed time draws near, so teach me something through which Allah may benefit me.'The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'Abbas, you are my uncle, but I cannot avail you anything against Allah. Rather, ask your Lord for pardon and well-being in this world and the next.' He said this three times.Then he came to him again at the turn of the year, and the Prophet ﷺ said the same to him."
حدثنا عبد الله بن بكر حدثنا حاتم يعني ابن أبي صغيرة حدثني
قدم علينا علي بن عبد الله بن عباس في بعض تلك المواسم قال فسمعته يقول حدثني أبي عبد الله بن عباس عن أبيه العباس أنه أتى رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله أنا عمك كبرت سني واقترب أجلي فعلمني شيئا ينفعني الله به قال يا عباس أنت عمي ولا أغني عنك من الله شيئا ولكن سل ربك العفو والعافية في الدنيا والآخرة قالها ثلاثا ثم أتاه عند قرن الحول فقال له مثل ذلك
Its chain of transmission is daif due to the anonymity of the man from Banu Muttalib. In the following hadith, 1767, it says "from the descendants of Abdul-Muttalib," and that is the correct version, Allah willing, because Ibn Saad narrated it in Tabaqat, 4/1/18, from Abdullah bin Bakr Sahmi, the teacher of Ahmad here, and from Muhammad bin Abdullah Ansari, both of them from Hatim, and in it he said, "a man from Banu Abdul-Muttalib."Hatim bin Abu Saghira, with fatha on the sad and kasra on the ghayn (with a dot), Abu Yunus Qushayri, is thiqah, thiqah, as Ahmad said.As for "at the turn of the year," it means at the end of the year and the beginning of the next.The hadith with the same meaning will come later with another sahih chain of transmission, 1783.
