He had known the Prophet ﷺ before the Prophet ﷺ was sent as a messenger. When the Prophet ﷺ was sent, he offered him a gift. I think it was camels. The Prophet ﷺ refused to accept it and said, "We do not accept the gifts of the polytheists."I asked, "What are the gifts of the polytheists?"He replied, "Their offerings and presents."
حدثنا هشيم أخبرنا ابن عون عن الحسن
وكانت بينه وبين النبي ﷺ معرفة قبل أن يبعث فلما بعث النبي ﷺ أهدى له هدية قال أحسبها إبلا فأبى أن يقبلها وقال إنا لا نقبل زبد المشركين قال قلت وما زبد المشركين قال رفدهم هديتهم

Its isnad is sahih. It is found in Abu Dawud 3/173, no. 3057, in "Kharaj," "The imam accepting gifts from polytheists." And Tirmidhi in "Siyar" has the same, 4/140, no. 1577, and he said, hasan sahih.
