Its isnad is sahih. Ismail is Ibn Ulaya. Habib bin Shaheed is trustworthy and firmly reliable, one of the most eminent of men. Imam Ahmad made clear that Ibn Ulaya narrated this hadith in two versions, in one he made the one left behind Ibn Zubayr, and in the other he made the one left behind Abdullah bin Jafar, this being because he dropped the word "he said" after the phrase "Yes." Muslim narrated it in this second version, 2:242-243, from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba from Ibn Ulaya, and from Ibn Rahawayh from Abu Usama from Habib bin Shaheed, making the questioner Ibn Zubayr and the one who answered Abdullah bin Jafar, who said, "Yes, so he carried me and left you." This makes explicit that the one left behind was Ibn Zubayr.This is supported by what will come in the Musnad of Ibn Abbas, 2146, by the route of Shuba from Habib from Ibn Abu Mulayka, who said he witnessed this event and made the questioner Ibn Zubayr and the one who answered Ibn Abbas, who said to him, "Yes, so he carried me and a boy from Banu Hashim and left you."Ibn Hajar discussed this dispute at length in Fath al-Bari, and concluded that the correct view is the one indicated by Bukhari's version, pointing out that Ahmad's version here has both forms. But this is complicated by what will come in the Musnad of Abdullah bin Zubayr, 16198, by the route of Hisham bin Urwa from his father, who said, Abdullah bin Zubayr said to Abdullah bin Jafar, "Do you remember the day we met the Prophet ﷺ, and he carried me and left you?"
