I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and approached him, taking him by the hand.I said, "Messenger of Allah, what is salvation in this matter?"He replied, "Uqba, guard your tongue, let your home suffice you, and weep over your sins."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me again and approached me, taking me by the hand. He said, "Uqba bin Amir, shall I teach you the best three surahs revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the great Furqan?"I answered, "Yes indeed, may Allah make me your ransom."So he taught me to recite "Say, He is Allah, the One," and "Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak," and "Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind."Then he said, "Uqba, do not forget them, and do not pass a single night without reciting them."Uqba said, "I have not forgotten them since he told me not to forget them, and I have never passed a night without reciting them."Uqba continued, Then I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ again and approached him, taking him by the hand. I said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me of the most virtuous deeds."He replied, "Uqba, maintain ties with the one who cuts you off, give to the one who deprives you, and turn away from the one who wrongs you."
Its chain of transmission is hasan, because of Ali bin Yazid Alhani. We only graded it hasan following Tirmidhi, for Ali is daif, while Qasim bin Abdul-Rahman is trustworthy. Tirmidhi narrated the hadith, 4/605, no. 2406, and said, hasan, in the chapter on asceticism, on guarding the tongue. But Haythami graded it daif, and said, it has a sahih chain of transmission. Majma, 7/148-149.
