My uncle Zaheer bin Rafi met me and said, "Nephew, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden us from something that was beneficial to us."I asked, "What is that, uncle?"He replied, "He forbade us from leasing out our fields," meaning their land at Sirar.I said, "Uncle, obedience to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ takes precedence."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'How do you lease them out?'"He answered, "We lease them in exchange for the produce along the irrigation channels and a measured amount of barley."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do not do that. Either cultivate them yourselves or let others cultivate them."So we sold our properties at Sirar.Abdullah said, I asked my father about the hadiths of Rafi bin Khadij, since at times he says "the Prophet ﷺ forbade us," and at other times he reports it from his uncles. He replied, "All of them are sound, and the one I prefer most is the narration of Ayub."
