Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhaysa bin Masud went to Khaybar on some business of theirs, and they parted ways. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed, and they found him slain. Then Muhaysa and Huwaysa, the two sons of Masud, came along, as did Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, the brother of the slain man, who was the youngest of them. They came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Abdul-Rahman began to speak first, since he was the one most entitled to pursue the matter of the blood. But the other two were older than he was, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let the eldest speak first, let the eldest speak first."So the two of them spoke about the case of their companion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You may establish your right to the blood-money for your companion, or your slain man, by fifty of you swearing oaths."They replied, "Messenger of Allah, it is a matter we did not witness, so how can we swear?"He said, "Then the Jews shall absolve themselves by fifty oaths sworn by them."They said, "They are a disbelieving people."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money himself.Sahl said, "I once entered a livestock pen of theirs, and one of those camels which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had paid as blood-money kicked me with its leg."
