Jafar bin Amr reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him alone as a scout to Quraysh. He said, "I came to the wooden cross on which Khubayb had been crucified, fearful of being spotted. I climbed up to it and untied Khubayb, and his body fell to the ground. I withdrew a short distance, then turned back, but I could no longer see Khubayb. It was as though the earth had swallowed him, and no trace of Khubayb has been found to this day."Abu Abdul-Rahman said, Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it to us with a chain going back to Zuhri. As for my father, he narrated it to us without mentioning Zuhri. Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it to us in Kufa and included Zuhri in the chain for us.

حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد بن أبي شيبة قال عبد الله وسمعته أنا من عبد الله بن أبي شيبة بالكوفة قال حدثنا جعفر بن عون عن إبراهيم بن إسماعيل قال أخبرني

جعفر بن عمرو بن أمية عن أبيه

أن رسول الله ﷺ بعثه وحده عينا إلى قريش قال جئت إلى خشبة خبيب وأنا أتخوف العيون فرقيت فيها فحللت خبيبا فوقع إلى الأرض فانتبذت غير بعيد ثم التفت فلم أر خبيبا ولكأنما ابتلعته الأرض فلم ير لخبيب أثر حتى الساعة قال أبو عبد الرحمن وقال ابن أبي شيبة لنا فيه عن الزهري وأما أبي فحدثنا عنه لم يذكر الزهري وحدثناه ابن أبي شيبة بالكوفة فجعله لنا عن الزهري
