Amr bin Awf, who was an ally of Banu Amir bin Luayy and had been present at Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrah to Bahrain to collect its tribute. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had concluded a peace agreement with the people of Bahrain and appointed Ala bin Hadrami over them.Abu Ubayda arrived from Bahrain with the wealth, and the Ansar heard of his arrival. They came to attend the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the dawn prayer and turned to leave, they presented themselves before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them and said, "I think you have heard that Abu Ubayda has arrived and has brought something."They replied, "Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Then receive good news and hope for what will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but I fear that the world will be spread out before you as it was spread out for those before you, and you will compete for it as they competed for it, and it will distract you as it distracted them."
