Ibn Ghanem reported that when he and Abu Darda entered the mosque of al-Jabiyah, they met Ubada bin Samit. Ubada took Ibn Ghanem's right hand with his left hand and Abu Darda's left hand with his right, then walked between them while they were conversing privately, and Allah knows best what they were discussing.Ubada bin Samit said, "If one or both of you live long enough, you will surely see a man from among the leading Muslims, meaning from their midst, who has recited the Quran in the manner of Muhammad ﷺ, repeating it and making it manifest, declaring lawful what it makes lawful and forbidden what it forbids, and stopping at its boundaries, or who has recited it in the manner of his brother, a recitation following the way of Muhammad ﷺ, repeating it and making it manifest, declaring lawful what it makes lawful and forbidden what it forbids, and stopping at its boundaries, yet he will not return to any standing among you except as the head of a dead donkey returns."While we were in this state, Shaddad bin Aws and Awf bin Malik appeared and sat with us.Shaddad said, "The thing I fear most for you, people, based on what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is hidden desire and shirk."Ubada bin Samit and Abu Darda responded, "May Allah forgive us. Did not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tell us that Satan has despaired of being worshipped in the Arabian Peninsula? As for hidden desire, we know it, it refers to the desires of this world such as its women and its pleasures. But what is this shirk you are warning us about, Shaddad?"Shaddad replied, "What do you think? If you saw a man praying for the sake of another man, or fasting for him, or giving charity for him, would you consider that he had committed shirk?"They answered, "Yes, by Allah, whoever prays for the sake of a man, or fasts for him, or gives charity for him has indeed committed shirk."Shaddad said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever prays to be seen has committed shirk, whoever fasts to be seen has committed shirk, and whoever gives charity to be seen has committed shirk.'"At that, Awf bin Malik said, "Should he not then take from all such deeds whatever was done seeking Allah's face, accepting what was done sincerely for Him and discarding what was tainted with shirk?"Shaddad responded, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say that Allah says, 'I am the best partner for whoever associates partners with Me. Whoever associates anything with Me, his entire deed, both its small portion and its large, belongs to the partner he associated with Me, and I have no need of it.'"
