Umar bin Khattab, during his caliphate, saw him praying two units of prayer after the Asr prayer. He walked over to him and struck him with his whip while he continued praying as he was. When he finished, Zayd said, "Commander of the Believers, by Allah, I will never abandon these two units after seeing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray them."Umar then sat down beside him and said, "Zayd bin Khalid, were it not that I fear people would take this as a stepping stone to praying right up until nightfall, I would not have struck anyone for performing them."
حدثنا عبد الرزاق وابن بكر قالا أنا ابن جريج قال سمعت أبا سعيد الأعمى يخبر عن رجل يقال له السائب مولى الفارسيين وقال ابن بكر مولى لفارس وقال حجاج مولى الفارسي
أنه رآه عمر بن الخطاب وهو خليفة ركع بعد العصر ركعتين فمشى إليه فضربه بالدرة وهو يصلي كما هو فلما انصرف قال زيد يا أمير المؤمنين فوالله لا أدعهما أبدا بعد أن رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يصليهما قال فجلس إليه عمر وقال يا زيد بن خالد لولا أني أخشى أن يتخذها الناس سلما إلى الصلاة حتى الليل لم أضرب فيهما
