In Madinah, upon the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "Where are your scholars, people of Madinah? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on this day, the day of Ashura, saying, 'Whoever among you wishes to fast it, let him fast it.' And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid something like this." Then he pulled out a lock of hair from his sleeve and said, "The Children of Israil were only destroyed when their women adopted this."
حدثنا سفيان عن الزهري عن حميد بن عبد الرحمن بن معاوية سمع
بالمدينة على منبر رسول الله ﷺ أين علماؤكم يا أهل المدينة سمعت رسول الله ﷺ في هذا اليوم يوم عاشوراء وهو يقول من شاء منكم أن يصومه فليصمه وسمعت رسول الله ﷺ ينهى عن مثل هذا وأخرج قصة من شعر من كمه فقال إنما هلكت بنو إسرائيل حين اتخذتها نساؤهم
