Its isnad is sahih, its narrators are well-known reliable figures already mentioned, and Awf bin Malik Ashjai was a companion who accepted Islam at the conquest of Makkah. Abu Dawud narrated the hadith in 3/72, no. 2721, in jihad, "The spoils of a slain enemy are not subject to the fifth," and something similar in meaning is found in Bukhari 6/246, no. 3141, in "Obligation of the Fifth," "Those who did not take a fifth from the spoils of a slain enemy."
