He informed him that he entered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ upon Maymuna bint Harith, who was his maternal aunt. She presented to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ some lizard meat that Umm Hufayd bint Harith had brought from Najd. Umm Hufayd was married to a man from Banu Jafar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not eat anything until he knew what it was. One of the women said, "Will you not tell the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what he is about to eat?" So they informed him that it was lizard meat, and he set it aside.Khalid said, "I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Is it forbidden?'"He replied, "No, but it is not found among my people, so I find myself averse to it."Khalid said, "So I drew it toward me and ate it while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ watched."Ibn Shihab said, Asam, meaning Yazid bin Asam, narrated this to him from Maymuna, and he had been raised in her care.

Its isnad is sahih. Its narrators are well-known and trustworthy figures from earlier generations. The phrase "from Salih bin Kaysan, and Ibn Shihab narrated" does not imply a break in the chain, for Salih transmitted frequently from Zuhri. Rather, it may be that Salih dictated from others, and they wrote it down, then he said, "and Ibn Shihab narrated," and they wrote that down as well. Then Ahmad took it and placed it among the narrations of Khalid.Bukhari related this hadith in 9/534, number 5391, in Fath, in the chapter on foods. Muslim related it in 3/1543, number 1945, in the chapter on hunting. Abu Dawud related it in 3/353, number 3794. Nasai related it in 7/198, number 4317. Ibn Majah related it in 2/1079, number 3241.
