My father heard me saying, "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" [Fatihah 1:1], and he said, "My son, beware of that."The narrator added, "I never saw any of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who hated an innovation in Islam more than he did."His father continued, "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and with Abu Bakr and Umar, and with Uthman, and I never heard any of them say it. So do not say it. When you recite, begin with 'All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds' [Fatihah 1:2]."
قال حدثنا إسماعيل قال حدثنا سعيد بن إياس الجريري عن قيس بن عباية
سمعني أبي وأنا أقول {بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم} فقال أي بني إياك قال ولم أر أحدا من أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ كان أبغض إليه حدثا في الإسلام منه فإني قد صليت مع رسول الله ﷺ ومع أبي بكر وعمر ومع عثمان فلم أسمع أحدا منهم يقولها فلا تقلها إذا أنت قرأت فقل {الحمد لله رب العالمين}
Its chain is hasan, following Tirmidhi, for he narrated it from the son of Abdullah bin Mughafal without naming him, and Qays bin Abayah Abu Nuama al-Hanafi is trustworthy, known by his kunya. Tirmidhi graded the hadith hasan because no one criticized Yazid bin Abdullah bin Mughafal, and Tirmidhi narrated from him.But Tirmidhi has faced a fierce campaign from those of our era who oppose this hadith. I think there is nothing behind it except bias. Everyone clings to his own evidence, and there is no need to weaken others.Tirmidhi narrated the hadith in 2/12, no. 244, in the Book of Prayer, in the chapter on what has been said about not reciting the basmalah aloud, and he graded it hasan. Nasai narrated it similarly in 2/1350, and Ibn Majah in 1/267, no. 815.
