I was standing in the ranks on the day of Badr when I looked to my right and to my left, and there I was between two young boys from the Ansar, both fresh in age. I wished I were between two stronger men.Then one of them nudged me and said, "Uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?"I replied, "Yes. What do you want with him, nephew?"He said, "I have been told that he insults the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By the One in whose hand my soul is, if I see him, my shadow will not part from his shadow until the one of us whose time comes first dies."Then the other nudged me and said the same thing to me. I was amazed at this.It was not long before I caught sight of Abu Jahl moving about among the people. I said to them, "Do you not see? This is the man you were asking about."They both rushed at him. He faced them, and they struck him until they killed him. Then they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him.He asked, "Which of you killed him?"Each one of them said, "I killed him."He asked, "Have you wiped your swords?"They answered, "No."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ examined the two swords and said, "Both of you killed him." He awarded his spoils to Muaz bin Amr bin Jamuh. The two were Muaz bin Amr bin Jamuh and Muaz bin Afra.

إني لواقف يوم بدر في الصف نظرت عن يميني وعن شمالي فإذا أنا بين غلامين من الأنصار حديثة أسنانهما تمنيت لو كنت بين أضلع منهما فغمزني أحدهما فقال يا عم هل تعرف أبا جهل قال قلت نعم وما حاجتك يا ابن أخي قال بلغني أنه سب رسول الله ﷺ والذي نفسي بيده لو رأيته لم يفارق سوادي سواده حتى يموت الأعجل منا قال فغمزني الآخر فقال لي مثلها قال فتعجبت لذلك قال فلم أنشب أن نظرت إلى أبي جهل يجول في الناس فقلت لهما ألا تريان هذا صاحبكما الذي تسألان عنه فابتدراه فاستقبلهما فضرباه حتى قتلاه ثم انصرفا إلى رسول الله ﷺ فأخبراه فقال أيكما قتله فقال كل واحد منهما أنا قتلته قال هل مسحتما سيفيكما قالا لا فنظر رسول الله ﷺ في السيفين فقال كلاكما قتله وقضى بسلبه لمعاذ بن عمرو بن الجموح وهما معاذ بن عمرو بن الجموح ومعاذ ابن عفراء
Its isnad is sahih. Yusuf bin Yaqub bin Abu Salama Majishun is trustworthy. Salih bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf is trustworthy, though he has few hadiths, and he has nothing in the Sahihayn besides this one. The hadith appears in Muslim 2:51, from Yahya bin Yahya, from Yusuf bin Majishun. Bukhari also narrated it, as noted in Dhakhair al-Mawarith 5054."Between one sturdier than her" means between one stronger than her, greater in build, and more powerful."My shadow did not part from his shadow" means my figure did not part from his figure. Every figure, whether belonging to goods, a person, or anything else, is called a "sawad," because it appears black when seen from a distance."The quicker of us to die" means whichever of us has the nearer appointed time, out of a determination to kill him or die in the attempt.Muaz bin Afra is Muaz bin Harith bin Rifa bin Harith bin Sawad bin Malik, and Afra was his mother. He became known by attribution to her.The word given here as "circles around" appears in manuscript K as "turns," and in its margin there is a variant reading that matches what is given here.
