When the Magian left the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I asked him about what had happened, and he told me that the Prophet ﷺ had given him the choice between paying the jizyah or being killed, and he chose to pay the jizyah.

Its isnad is daif because of its interruption. Abu Mughira is Abdullah bin Hajjaj Khawlani Himsi, who is trustworthy, one of the teachers of Ahmad. In the two original manuscripts it appears as "Mughira," and we added "Abu," because there is no one named Mughira among the teachers of Ahmad. Abdul-Aziz is the one who narrates from Saeed bin Abdul-Aziz.Saeed bin Abdul-Aziz Tanukhi Damashqi is trustworthy and authoritative, ranked by Ahmad on the same level as Uzai. Sulayman bin Musa Ashdaq is trustworthy, a jurist among the people of Syria in his time, but he came later and did not meet Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. He died in the year 115 or 119.The hadith appears in Al-Zawaid, 6:12, where its defect is attributed to this interruption. See also 1657.
