I came to Mutayyir to ask him about the hadith of Dhul Yadayn. When I came to him and asked him, I found him to be a very old man whose memory of the hadith would not come through due to his advanced age.So his son Shuayth said, "Yes, father, you told me that Dhul Yadayn met you at Dhu Khushub and related to you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in one of the two afternoon prayers, namely the Asr prayer, praying two rakahs, then gave the salam. The people who were quick to leave departed, then he said, 'Has the prayer been shortened?' Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar.Dhul Yadayn said, 'Has the prayer been shortened, or did you forget?'He replied, 'The prayer has not been shortened, nor did I forget.'Then he turned to Abu Bakr and Umar and asked, 'What does Dhul Yadayn say?'They replied, 'He has spoken truthfully, Messenger of Allah.'So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, the people gathered back, and he led them in two rakahs, then gave the salam, then performed with them the two prostrations of forgetfulness."
