Abu Ishaq reported,

Dhul-Jawshan came to the Prophet ﷺ and offered him a horse as a gift, while he was at that time still a polytheist. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declined to accept it, then said, "If you wish, sell it to me," or, "Would you sell it to me in exchange for a choice selection from the armor of Badr?"Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Would you like to be the first to enter into this religion?"He replied, "No."The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What prevents you from doing so?"He said, "I have seen that your own people called you a liar, drove you out, and fought you. So I will wait and see what you do. If you prevail over them, I will believe in you and follow you. But if they prevail over you, I will not follow you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Dhul-Jawshan, perhaps if you live..." and he mentioned the rest of the hadith in similar terms.

حدثنا شيبان بن أبي شيبة أبو محمد قال حدثنا جرير يعني ابن حازم

عن أبي إسحاق الهمداني قال

قدم على النبي ﷺ ذو الجوشن وأهدى له فرسا وهو يومئذ مشرك فأبى رسول الله ﷺ أن يقبله ثم قال إن شئت بعتنيه أو هل لك أن تبيعنيه بالمتخيرة من دروع بدر ثم قال له ﷺ هل لك أن تكون أول من يدخل في هذا الأمر فقال لا فقال له النبي ﷺ ما يمنعك من ذلك قال رأيت قومك قد كذبوك وأخرجوك وقاتلوك فانظر ما تصنع فإن ظهرت عليهم آمنت بك واتبعتك وإن ظهروا عليك لم أتبعك فقال له رسول الله ﷺ يا ذا الجوشن لعلك إن بقيت وذكر الحديث نحوا منه
