During the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab, he used to say, "Uthman will not die until he becomes caliph."We asked, "How do you know that?"He replied, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Last night I saw in a dream that three of my companions were weighed. Abu Bakr was weighed and outweighed, then Umar was weighed and outweighed, then Uthman was weighed and fell short, but our companion is righteous.'"
Its isnad is sahih, its narrators are like the previous one, and Aswad bin Hilal Muharibi is trustworthy, a great mukhadram. The hadith was narrated similarly by Abu Dawud from Abu Bakra, 4/207, no. 4634, 4635, in the book on the Sunnah, chapter on the caliphs, and likewise by Tirmidhi, 4/540, no. 2287, who said, hasan sahih, in the book on dreams, chapter on what has been reported concerning the Prophet's ﷺ dream of the scale and the bucket.
