I used to serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said to me, "Rabia, why don't you get married?"I said, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, I do not wish to marry. I have nothing to support a wife with, and I do not want anything to distract me from serving you." So he turned away from me.I continued serving him as before, then he said to me a second time, "Rabia, why don't you get married?"I said, "I do not wish to marry. I have nothing to support a wife with, and I do not want anything to distract me from serving you." So he turned away from me.Then I thought to myself, "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ knows better than I do what is good for me in this world and the next. By Allah, if he says 'Marry' again, I will say, 'Yes, Messenger of Allah, command me with whatever you wish.'"He said, "Rabia, why don't you get married?"I said, "Yes, command me with whatever you wish."He said, "Go to the family of so-and-so," a clan of the Ansar who had been somewhat distant from the Prophet ﷺ, "and tell them, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you commanding you to marry me to so-and-so,'" a woman from among them.So I went and told them, "The Messenger of Allah has sent me to you commanding you to marry me to so-and-so."They said, "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah and to the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shall not return except with what he came for." So they married me to her, treated me kindly, and did not even ask me for proof.I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saddened. He said to me, "What is wrong with you, Rabia?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, I came to a noble people. They married me to her, honored me, treated me kindly, and did not ask me for proof. But I have no dowry."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Burayda al-Aslami, gather for him the weight of a date stone in gold." So they gathered for me the weight of a date stone in gold. I took what they gathered for me and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ.He said, "Take this to them and say, 'This is her dowry.'" So I went to them and said, "This is her dowry." They were pleased with it and accepted it, saying, "It is plenty and good."Then I returned to the Prophet ﷺ saddened. He said, "Rabia, why are you sad?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have never seen a more noble people. They were pleased with what I brought them, treated me well, and said, 'It is plenty and good.' But I have nothing for the wedding feast."He said, "Burayda, gather a sheep for him." So they gathered for me a large, fat ram. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Go to Ayesha and tell her to send the basket containing the food."So I went to her and told her what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered me to convey. She said, "Here is the basket. It contains nine measures of barley. By Allah, we have no other food for the morning. Take it." So I took it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what Ayesha had said.He said, "Take this to them and say, 'Let this be made into bread for you in the morning.'" So I went to them, taking the ram with me, accompanied by some men from Aslam. I said, "Let this be made into bread for you, and this into a cooked dish."They said, "We will take care of the bread for you. As for the ram, you take care of it yourselves." So I and some men from Aslam took the ram, slaughtered it, skinned it, and cooked it. By morning we had bread and meat. I held the wedding feast and invited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Then he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a piece of land, and Abu Bakr also gave me a piece of land. Then worldly disputes arose between us over the cluster of a date palm. I said, "It is within my boundary," and Abu Bakr said, "It is within my boundary." Words were exchanged between me and Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr said something he disliked having said and regretted it.He said to me, "Rabia, say the same back to me so it will be even."I said, "I will not do it."Abu Bakr said, "You will say it, or I will seek the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ help against you."I said, "I will not do it."He left the land and Abu Bakr set out to the Prophet ﷺ, and I went following him. Some men from Aslam came and said to me, "May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr. For what is he seeking the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ help against you, when he was the one who said to you what he said?"I said, "Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. This is the second of the two. This is the elder of the Muslims. Beware lest he turn around and see you supporting me against him and become angry, then come to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who will become angry on his behalf, then Allah
will become angry at the anger of them both, and Rabia will perish."They said, "What do you command us to do?"He said, "Go back."Abu Bakr
went on to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I followed him alone until he came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the story as it had happened. The Prophet raised his head to me and said, "Rabia, what is this between you and al-Siddiq?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, it was like this and like this. He said to me a word he disliked having said, then he said, 'Say the same as I said so it will be even,' but I refused."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, do not say it back to him. Rather say, 'May Allah forgive you, Abu Bakr.'"So I said, "May Allah forgive you, Abu Bakr."al-Hasan said, Abu Bakr
turned away weeping.
