I was the scribe for Juzz bin Muawiya, the uncle of Ahnaf bin Qays, when a letter from Umar reached us a year before his death, instructing, "Kill every sorcerer," and Sufyan sometimes added, "and every sorceress," "separate every Magian from those within the prohibited degrees of marriage whom they have wed, and forbid them from murmuring incantations."So we killed three sorcerers and began separating each man from the woman he had married in violation of Allah's Book. Juzz prepared a great feast, laid a sword across his thigh, and summoned the Magians. They cast down the load of one or two mules' worth of silver and ate without their murmured incantations.Umar had not previously taken, and Sufyan sometimes said "accepted," the jizyah from the Magians until Abdul-Rahman bin Awf testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken it from the Magians of Hajar.Ubayy said that Sufyan said, "Bajala performed Hajj with Musab in the year seventy."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Sufyan is Ibn Uyayna, and Amr is Ibn Dinar. Bajala, pronounced with a fatha on the ba and a light, non-doubled jim, is Ibn Abda, pronounced with a fatha on the ain and the ba, al-Tamimi al-Anbari. He was a trustworthy successor. Abu Zura and Mujahid bin Musa al-Makki both affirmed his reliability. Bukhari gave his biography in Kabir 46/1/3, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat. It appears that Shafii was at first unaware of who he was, then later came to know him. In Umm 6:125 he said, "Bajala is an unknown man, not well known, and it is not known that Juzz bin Muawiya was an agent for Umar bin Khattab." Something similar appears in Sunan al-Kubra 8:248, quoting Shafii. But afterward he said, in Risala §1186 with our commentary, "The hadith of Bajala is connected. He did indeed meet Umar bin Khattab, and he was a scribe for some of his governors." Juzz bin Muawiya was one of Umar's agents in the region of Ahwaz, see Tarikh Tabari 4:196, 211. In Fath al-Bari it states he was Umar's agent over Ahwaz, while in Tirmidhi's version it occurs that he was over Manadhir. I say, that is one of the villages of Ahwaz. See also his biography in Isaba 1:244.The hadith was narrated in full by Abu Ubayd in Amwal §77, from Sufyan bin Uyayna. Shafii narrated it in Risala §1183 and Umm 6:96, and Tayalisi 225 also narrated it from Sufyan, but in abridged form. Bukhari narrated it at length, 6:184-185, from Ali bin Madini from Sufyan. Likewise Bayhaqi narrated it in Sunan al-Kubra 8:247-248, by the route of Sadan bin Nasr from Sufyan. See the rest of its sourcing in our commentary on Risala. See also what will come at 1672 and 1685.Al-zamzama is speech that the Magians utter in a low voice while eating."His forbidden things are stated in the Book of Allah" means what is forbidden to him is stated in the Quran."The load of a mule", the waqr, with kasra on the waw, means a load, and it is most often used for the load carried by a mule or a donkey, as stated in Nihaya. His saying, "Sufyan said, Bajala performed hajj," and so on, means that Amr bin Dinar al-Makki heard it from Bajala at that time. Bukhari's narration from Sufyan reads, "He said, I heard Amr say, I was sitting with Jabir bin Zayd and Amr bin Aws, when Bajala related to them, in the year seventy, the year Musab bin Zubayr performed hajj with the people of Basra, near the steps of Zamzam," and then he went on to relate the hadith.
