We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Hudaybiyah, fourteen hundred strong. There was a well with fifty sheep that could not get their fill from it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat down at its edge, and either prayed or spat into it, and it surged forth. We drank and drew water. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the pledge of allegiance at the foot of the tree, and I was among the first to pledge to him. He continued taking pledges, and when he was in the middle of the people, he said, "Pledge to me, Salama."I replied, "I have already pledged to you among the first of the people, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Do so again." Seeing that I was unarmed, he gave me a small shield or buckler. He kept taking pledges until he was at the end of the people, then he said, "Will you not pledge to me?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have already pledged among the first of the people, in the middle, and at the end."He said, "Do so again." So I pledged to him. Then he said, "Where is the buckler or shield I gave you?"I said, "Messenger of Allah, my uncle Amir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him."He laughed and said, "You are like the man who said, 'O Allah, grant me a friend dearer to me than myself.'"Then the polytheists sent word to us about a truce, until each side was walking among the other. I was a servant to Talha bin Ubaydullah, grooming his horse, watering it, and eating from his food, having left my family and property as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger. When we and the people of Mecca had made peace and mingled with one another, I came to a tree, swept away its thorns, and lay down in its shade. Four men from Mecca came to me, and being polytheists, they began to insult the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So I moved away from them to another tree. They hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were like that, a caller called out from the bottom of the valley, "O Emigrants, Ibn Zunaym has been killed!" I drew my sword and rushed at the four, seized their weapons, and bundled them together. Then I said, "By the One who has honored Muhammad, not one of you will raise his head without my striking the part that holds his eyes." I came driving them along to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my uncle Amir came leading Ibn Mikraz on his horse, leading seventy men, until we brought them to a halt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at them and said, "Leave them, let theirs be the start of treachery." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pardoned them, and the verse was revealed, "And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them" [Fath 48:24].Then we returned to Medina and stopped at a place called Lahy Jamal. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought forgiveness for whoever climbed the mountain that night to act as a scout for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. I climbed it that night two or three times. Then we arrived in Medina, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out his riding camels with his servant Rabah, and I was with him. I went out with Talha's horse, taking it to pasture along with the camels. When morning came, Abdul-Rahman bin Uyayna al-Fazari had raided the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ camels, driven them all off, and killed their herdsman.
