When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ resolved to have a bell struck to gather the people for prayer, though he disliked it because it resembled the practice of the Christians, a visitor came to me in the night while I was asleep. He was a man wearing two green garments, carrying a bell in his hand.I said to him, "Abdullah, will you sell this bell?"He asked, "What will you do with it?"I replied, "We will use it to call people to prayer."He said, "Shall I not show you something better than that?"I said, "Yes, please."He said, "You should say, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to prayer, come to prayer. Come to success, come to success. Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no god but Allah."Then he stepped back a short distance and said, "Then when you stand for the prayer, you should say, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Come to prayer, come to success. The prayer is now beginning, the prayer is now beginning. Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no god but Allah."When morning came, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him of what I had seen.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is a true vision, Allah willing." He then ordered that the call to prayer be made, and Bilal, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, used to give this call and summon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to prayer.One morning he came to call him for the dawn prayer, but he was told that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asleep. So Bilal called out at the top of his voice, "Prayer is better than sleep."Saeed bin Musayab said, "And so this phrase was incorporated into the call to the dawn prayer."
قال حدثنا يعقوب قال أخبرنا أبي عن ابن إسحاق قال وذكر محمد بن مسلم الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب
لما أجمع رسول الله ﷺ أن يضرب بالناقوس يجمع للصلاة الناس وهو له كاره لموافقته النصارى طاف بي من الليل طائف وأنا نائم رجل عليه ثوبان أخضران وفي يده ناقوس يحمله قال فقلت له يا عبد الله أتبيع الناقوس قال وما تصنع به قلت ندعو به إلى الصلاة قال أفلا أدلك على خير من ذلك قال فقلت بلى قال تقول الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله حي على الصلاة حي على الصلاة حي على الفلاح حي على الفلاح الله أكبر الله أكبر لا إله إلا الله قال ثم استأخرت غير بعيد قال ثم تقول إذا أقمت الصلاة الله أكبر الله أكبر أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله حي على الصلاة حي على الفلاح قد قامت الصلاة قد قامت الصلاة الله أكبر الله أكبر لا إله إلا الله قال فلما أصبحت أتيت رسول الله ﷺ فأخبرته بما رأيت قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن هذه لرؤيا حق إن شاء الله ثم أمر بالتأذين فكان بلال مولى أبي بكر يؤذن بذلك ويدعو رسول الله ﷺ إلى الصلاة قال فجاءه فدعاه ذات غداة إلى الفجر فقيل له إن رسول الله ﷺ نائم قال فصرخ بلال بأعلى صوته الصلاة خير من النوم قال سعيد بن المسيب فأدخلت هذه الكلمة في التأذين إلى صلاة الفجر
