The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was at Abwa or Waddan, and I offered him some meat from a wild donkey while he was in the state of ihram. He returned it to me. When he saw the disappointment on my face, he said, "We are not returning it because we dislike it, but because we are in a state of ihram."I also heard him say, "There is no protected sanctuary except for Allah and His Messenger."He was asked about the polytheists whose homes are raided at night, where their women and children may be harmed in the process. He replied, "They are part of them."Then Zuhri added, "Later, he forbade that."
Its chain of transmission is sahih, among the most sahih of the sahih narrations. Ubaydullah bin Abdullah is Ibn Utbah bin Masud Hudhali, one of the seven well-known jurists. It is possible that he is Ibn Abu Thawr, for he narrates from Ibn Abbas and Zuhri narrates from him, but Zuhri will state this explicitly. The hadith appears in Bukhari 3/148, in the book of sharecropping, "There is no protected reserve except for Allah and His Messenger," and in Muslim 2/850, number 1193, in the book of Hajj, on the prohibition of hunting for one in the state of ihram, and in Abu Dawud 3/180, number 3083, in the book of land tax, concerning land that the ruler declares protected, and in Tirmidhi 3/197, number 849, in the book of Hajj, on what has been said about the disapproval of hunting for one in the state of ihram, and in Ibn Majah 2/1032, number 3090, and in Abdul-Razzaq 4/264, number 8322.The hadith is abrogated, as Zuhri said, except in cases of necessity.
