I was a man who had been given a desire for women unlike anyone else. When Ramadan arrived, I declared zihar against my wife until Ramadan should end, fearing that if I touched her at night I would continue with her into the daytime and be unable to stop myself. While she was serving me one night, something of her was uncovered to me, and I leapt upon her. When morning came, I went out to my people and told them what had happened. I said to them, "Come with me to the Prophet ﷺ so I can inform him of my situation."They said, "No, by Allah, we will not do it. We fear that a verse of the Quran may be revealed about us, or that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may say something about us whose disgrace will remain upon us. But you go yourself and do what seems best to you."So I set out and came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said to me, "Did you really do that?"I said, "I did it."He said, "Did you really do that?"I said, "I did it."He said, "Did you really do that?"I said, "Yes, here I am. Carry out Allah's judgment upon me, for I will bear it patiently."He said, "Free a slave."I struck the side of my neck with my hand and said, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I do not own anything besides this neck of mine."He said, "Then fast for two months."I said, "Messenger of Allah, did what befell me befall me except because of fasting?"He said, "Then give charity."I said, "By the One who sent you with the truth, we spent this night of ours hungry, having no supper."He said, "Go to the man in charge of the charity of Banu Zurayq and tell him to hand it over to you. Then feed sixty poor people from it on your behalf with a wasq of dates, and use the rest for yourself and your dependents."I returned to my people and said, "I found narrowness and poor judgment with you, but I found ease and blessing with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He has ordered your charity to be given to me, so hand it over to me."So they handed it over to me.
