Abdullah bin Ateek reported,

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever leaves his house as a fighter in the path of Allah ," then he gestured with three of his fingers, the middle finger, the index finger, and the thumb, joining them together, and said, "and where are the strivers in Allah's path? If he falls from his mount and dies, his reward is assured with Allah Most High. If a creature stings him and he dies, his reward is assured with Allah. If he dies a natural death, his reward is assured with Allah ."By Allah, this is a statement I had never heard from any of the Arabs before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it. So whoever dies in this way, his reward is assured with Allah Most High, and whoever dies struck down in battle has earned the final return.

قال حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال أخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق عن محمد بن إبراهيم بن الحارث عن محمد بن عبد الله بن عتيك أحد بني سلمة

عن أبيه عبد الله بن عتيك قال

سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول من خرج من بيته مجاهدا في سبيل الله عز وجل ثم قال بأصابعه هؤلاء الثلاث الوسطى والسبابة والإبهام فجمعهن وقال وأين المجاهدون فخر عن دابته فمات فقد وقع أجره على الله تعالى أو لدغته دابة فمات فقد وقع أجره على الله أو مات حتف أنفه فقد وقع أجره على الله عز وجل والله إنها لكلمة ما سمعتها من أحد من العرب قبل رسول الله ﷺ فمات فقد وقع أجره على الله تعالى ومن مات قعصا فقد استوجب المآب
