When Amr bin Saeed dispatched troops to Mecca to fight Ibn Zubayr, Abu Shurayh came to him, spoke with him, and informed him of what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Abu Shurayh went out to the gathering of his people and sat down among them. I rose and went to sit with him, and he related to his people what he had told Amr bin Saeed of what he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and what Amr bin Saeed had said to him in reply.Abu Shurayh said, "I told him, 'We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he conquered Mecca. On the day after the conquest, some men of Khuza attacked a man from Huzayl, who was a polytheist, and killed him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood among us and addressed us, saying, "People, Allah made Mecca sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth, so it is sacred by the sanctity of Allah Most High until the Day of Resurrection. It is not lawful for any person who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood within it or to cut down its trees. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, nor will it be made lawful for anyone after me, and it was not made lawful for me except for one hour, in anger against its people. Now its sanctity has returned, just as it was yesterday. Let those present convey this to those absent. If anyone tells you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought in it, tell him that Allah
permitted it for His Messenger but did not permit it for you. People of Khuza, withhold your hands from killing, for it has happened too often. If you kill anyone, I will pay his blood-money. Whoever is killed after this stand of mine, his family will have one of two choices. If they wish, they may take the life of the killer, or if they wish, they may accept blood-money."'"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money for the man whom Khuza had killed.Amr bin Saeed said to Abu Shurayh, "Go on your way, old man. We know better than you the sanctity of Mecca. It does not protect a shedder of blood, nor one who casts off obedience, nor one who refuses to pay tribute."I said, "I was present and you were absent, and I have conveyed the message. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded that those of us present convey it to those absent, and I have conveyed it to you. The matter is now yours to deal with."
