I came in upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reciting "Competition in increase distracts you, until you visit the graves" [Takathur 102:1–2].He said, "The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth!' But son of Adam, do you have anything of your wealth except what you have eaten and consumed, what you have worn and worn out, or what you have given in charity and sent forth?"Qatada used to say, "Any charity that has not been received is nothing."

دخلت على رسول الله ﷺ وهو يقرأ ألهاكم التكاثر حتى زرتم المقابر قال فقال يقول ابن آدم مالي مالي وهل لك يا ابن آدم من مالك إلا ما أكلت فأفنيت أو لبست فأبليت أو تصدقت فأمضيت وكان قتادة يقول كل صدقة لم تقبض فليس بشيء
