A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "You are the master of Quraysh."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "The Master is Allah."The man said, "You are the most eloquent among them in speech and the most generous in giving."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let one of you speak with measured words and not let Satan carry him away."
حدثنا حجاج حدثني شعبة قال سمعت قتادة قال سمعت
جاء رجل إلى النبي ﷺ فقال أنت سيد قريش فقال النبي ﷺ السيد الله قال أنت أفضلها فيها قولا وأعظمها فيها طولا فقال رسول الله ﷺ ليقل أحدكم بقوله ولا يستجره الشيطان
Its isnad is sahih, previously mentioned at 1353. It has been said that this was abrogated after the rulings were firmly established and the companions had become fully submissive to the legislation. We have also previously mentioned, just a little before, the statement of one of the companions to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "O my master," and the well-known hadith of intercession came after it, "I am the master of the children of Adam." In this statement Allah drew attention to the fact that it is not permissible to praise someone to his face, and this too contains an indication of that.
