Aswad bin Sari reported,

He was a man from the tribe of Banu Saad, and he was the first to deliver storytelling sermons in this mosque, meaning the congregational mosque.He said, "I went on four military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some people began seizing the children after they had killed the combatants. Word of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said, 'What is the matter with people who, having killed the combatants, then went on to seize the children?'"A man asked, "Messenger of Allah, are they not the offspring of the polytheists?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Indeed, the best among you are the children of the polytheists. Every soul is born upon the natural disposition, and it remains so until its tongue can express itself. Then its parents make it a Jew or a Christian."The narrator said, "And al-Hasan said this last part softly."

وكان رجلا من بني سعد قال وكان أول من قص في هذا المسجد يعني المسجد الجامع قال غزوت مع رسول الله ﷺ أربع غزوات قال فتناول قوم الذرية بعدما قتلوا المقاتلة فبلغ ذلك رسول الله ﷺ فقال ألا ما بال أقوام قتلوا المقاتلة حتى تناولوا الذرية قال فقال رجل يا رسول الله أوليس أبناء المشركين قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن خياركم أبناء المشركين إنها ليست نسمة تولد إلا ولدت على الفطرة فما تزال عليها حتى يبين عنها لسانها فأبواها يهودانها أو ينصرانها قال وأخفاها الحسن
