Mutarrif reported,

I came to Uthman bin Abu As, and he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Fasting is a shield, like the shield one of you has in battle.'The last thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted to me when he sent me to Taif was when he said, 'Uthman, keep the prayer brief, for among the people are the elderly and those with needs.'"

حدثنا يونس قال حدثنا حماد يعني ابن زيد عن محمد بن إسحاق عن سعيد بن أبي هند

عن مطرف قال

دخلت على عثمان بن أبي العاص فقال إني سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول الصيام جنة كجنة أحدكم من القتال وكان آخر ما عهد إلي رسول الله ﷺ حين بعثني إلى الطائف قال يا عثمان تجوز في الصلاة فإن في القوم الكبير وذا الحاجة
