I said, "Messenger of Allah, appoint me as the imam of my people."He replied, "You are their imam. Follow the pace of the weakest among them, and take a muezzin who does not take payment for his call to prayer."
قال حدثنا عبد الصمد قال حدثنا حماد عن الجريري عن أبي العلاء
قلت يا رسول الله اجعلني إمام قومي فقال أنت إمامهم واقتد بأضعفهم واتخذ مؤذنا لا يأخذ على أذانه أجرا
Its isnad is sahih, like the one before it. The hadith was narrated by Abu Dawud, 1/146, no. 531, in the Book of Prayer, on taking payment for calling the adhan, and by Nasai, 2/23, no. 672, in the Book of Adhan, similarly.
