Laqit set out as an envoy to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accompanied by a friend of his named Nuhayk bin Asim bin Malik bin Muntafiq.Laqit said, My friend and I travelled until we reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the very end of Rajab. We came to him and caught him just as he was leaving the morning prayer. He stood up to address the people and said, "People, I have been saving my voice for you these four days. Now I shall make you hear me. Is there any man here whom his people sent, saying, 'Learn for us what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says'? And then perhaps he lets himself be distracted by his own thoughts, or by chatting with his companion, or he is distracted by error. I will be questioned as to whether I delivered the message. Listen, and you will live. Sit down. Sit down."So the people sat, but my friend and I stayed standing, until his heart and his gaze were free for us. Then I said, "Messenger of Allah, what knowledge of the unseen do you have?"He laughed, by Allah's life, and shook his head, for he knew I was hoping to catch him in a slip. He said, "Your Lord has kept back five keys of the unseen which none knows but Allah," and he pointed with his hand.I asked, "What are they?"He said, "Knowledge of death. He knows the death appointed for each one of you, and you do not know it. And knowledge of the seed when it lies in the womb. He knows it and you do not. And knowledge of what tomorrow holds, and what you will eat tomorrow, and you do not know it. And knowledge of the day of rain. He looks down upon you in hardship, downcast and afraid, and He keeps laughing, for He knows that your relief is near."Laqit said, "We shall never lack good from a Lord who laughs."The Prophet ﷺ continued, "And knowledge of the day of the Hour."I said, "Messenger of Allah, teach us what you teach the people, and what you know, for we belong to a tribe whose word no one accepts, not Madhhij, who look down on us, nor Khathaam, who are our allies, nor even our own clan, of which we are part."He said, "You will remain as long as you remain, then your Prophet ﷺ will die, then you will remain as long as you remain, then the Shout will be sent forth. By the life of your God, it will leave nothing alive on the face of the earth, and the angels who are with your Lord
will die too. Then your Lord
alone will go about the earth, and the lands will lie empty before Him. Then your Lord
will send the sky down with a great downpour from beside the Throne. By the life of your God, it will leave no spot where a slain man fell and no grave of a dead man without splitting the grave open over him, until he is formed anew from his head down and sits up straight. Then your Lord will say, 'What of it?' about the state he had been in, and he will say, 'My Lord, only yesterday, only today.' For his memory of life makes it seem to him that he was with his family just now."I said, "Messenger of Allah, how will He gather us after the winds and decay and wild beasts have torn us to pieces?"He said, "I will give you a likeness of that from among Allah's bounties. The earth, you looked out upon it when it was parched and worn away, and you said it would never live again. Then your Lord
sent the rain down upon it, and only a few days passed before you looked out upon it and it was one green expanse. By the life of your God, He is more able to gather them from the water than to gather the plants of the earth. So they will come out of their graves and from the places where they fell, and you will look at Him and He will look at you."I said, "Messenger of Allah, how, when we fill the whole earth and He is but one, shall we look at Him and He at us?"He said, "I will give you a likeness of that from among the bounties of Allah
. The sun and the moon are a small sign from Him. You all see them and they see you, at one and the same time, and none of you crowds another in seeing them. By the life of your God, He is more able that He should see you and you should see Him than that you should see those two and they should see you, without any crowding in seeing them."I said, "Messenger of Allah, what will our Lord
do with us when we meet Him?"He said, "You will be brought before Him with your faces laid bare to Him, and nothing of you hidden from Him. Then your Lord
will take in His hand a scoop of water and sprinkle it toward you, and by the life of your God, not one drop of it will miss the face of any of you. As for the Muslim, it will leave his face like a white robe, and as for the disbeliever, it will mark his face like black pitch. Then your Prophet ﷺ will depart, and the righteous will spread out behind him, and they will cross a bridge over the Fire. One of you will tread upon the embers and cry out, and your Lord
will say, 'Its time has come.' Then you will come out upon the pool of the Messenger, thirstier, by Allah, than any crowd of drinkers you have ever seen. By the life of your God, not one of you will stretch out his hand without a cup being placed in it that purifies him of excrement and urine and filth. The sun and the moon will be held back, and you will see neither of them."I said, "Messenger of Allah, by what light shall we see?"He said, "By a light like your sight at this very hour." And this was before sunrise, on a day when the earth was bright and the mountains stood facing it.I said, "Messenger of Allah, how shall we be repaid for our bad deeds and our good ones?"He said, "A good deed tenfold, and a bad deed by its like, unless He pardons."I said, "Messenger of Allah, is it either Paradise or the Fire?"He said, "By the life of your God, the Fire has seven gates, and between any two of them a rider travels seventy years. And Paradise has eight gates, and between any two of them a rider travels seventy years."I said, "Messenger of Allah, what shall we come out upon in Paradise?"He said, "Upon rivers of clarified honey, and rivers of wine that brings no headache and no regret, and rivers of milk whose taste never turns, and water that never grows stagnant, and fruit, by the life of your God, such as you know, and with it something better than its like, and purified spouses."I said, "Messenger of Allah, shall we have wives there, and are there righteous women among them?"He said, "The righteous women are for the righteous men. You will take pleasure in them as you took your pleasures in this world, and they will take pleasure in you, except that there will be no bearing of children."Laqit said, I asked, "Is that the utmost we shall attain and come to?" The Prophet ﷺ gave him no answer.I said, "Messenger of Allah, on what shall I pledge allegiance to you?"The Prophet ﷺ stretched out his hand and said, "On establishing prayer, paying zakat, parting from the idolater, and associating no other god with Allah."I said, "And that what lies between the east and the west shall be ours?"At that the Prophet ﷺ drew back his hand, thinking I was stipulating something he could not grant me.I said, "That we may settle in it wherever we wish, and that no man bears guilt except for himself."So he stretched out his hand and said, "That is yours. You may settle where you wish, and no one shall bring guilt upon you but yourself."Then we withdrew from him, and he said, "These two, by the life of your God, are among the most God-fearing of people in this life and the next."Kaab bin Khudariyya, one of Banu Bakr bin Kilab, asked, "Who are they, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "Banu Muntafiq. They are worthy of it."We turned away, then I came back to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, is there any good for any of those who died in their days of ignorance?"He said, in the hearing of a man from the common throng of Quraysh, "By Allah, your father Muntafiq is in the Fire."It was as though a burning heat fell between my skin and my face and my flesh at what he said about my father in front of everyone. I was about to say, "And your father too, Messenger of Allah?" but then I saw that this would be the more ignorant course. So I said, "Messenger of Allah, and your own family?"He said, "And my family too, by Allah's life. Whenever you come upon the grave of an Amiri or a Qurashi idolater, say, 'Muhammad has sent me to you to bring you news that will grieve you. You will be dragged on your face and your belly in the Fire.'"I said, "Messenger of Allah, why has that been done to them, when they followed a way that was the only one they knew how to follow, and they thought they were doing right?"He said, "That is because Allah
sent, at the end of every seven nations, a prophet. Whoever disobeyed his prophet was among the misguided, and whoever obeyed his prophet was among the rightly guided."
