Saeed bin Jubayr reported,

I was sitting with Abdullah bin Utba bin Masud, whom Ibn Zubayr had appointed as judge, when a letter from Ibn Zubayr arrived for him."Peace be upon you. To proceed, you wrote asking me about the grandfather. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Were I to take a close friend from this community apart from my Lord , I would have taken the son of Abu Quhafa, but he is my brother in faith and my companion in the cave.' He treated the grandfather as a father, and the most deserving ruling for us to adopt is the position of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq ."

عن سعيد بن جبير قال

كنت جالسا عند عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود وكان ابن الزبير جعله على القضاء إذ جاءه كتاب ابن الزبير سلام عليك أما بعد فإنك كتبت تسألني عن الجد وإن رسول الله ﷺ قال لو كنت متخذا من هذه الأمة خليلا دون ربي عز وجل لاتخذت ابن أبي قحافة ولكنه أخي في الدين وصاحبي في الغار جعل الجد أبا وأحق ما أخذناه قول أبي بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه
