I set out with Ubaydullah bin Adi bin Khiyar to Syria. When we reached Homs, Ubaydullah said to me, "Would you like to visit Wahshi and ask him about the killing of Hamza?"I said, "Yes." Wahshi was living in Homs.We asked about him, and we were told, "There he is, in the shade of his palace, looking like a bloated wineskin."We came up to him, stopped before him, and greeted him, and he returned our greeting. Ubaydullah had wrapped his face with his turban so that Wahshi could see only his eyes and feet.Ubaydullah said, "Wahshi, do you recognize me?"Wahshi looked at him and said, "No, by Allah. But I do know that Adi bin Khiyar married a woman called Umm Qital, daughter of Abul-Is, and she bore him a boy in Mecca. I sought a wet-nurse for him, and I carried that child along with his mother and handed him to her. It is as if I am looking now at your feet."Ubaydullah uncovered his face and said, "Will you not tell us about the killing of Hamza?"He said, "Yes. Hamza killed Tuayma bin Adi at Badr, and my master Jubayr bin Mutim said to me, 'If you kill Hamza in revenge for my uncle, you are free.' When the people went out on the day of Aynayn (Aynayn is a small mountain below Uhud, with a valley between them), I went out with the people to fight. When they formed their ranks for battle, Siba came out challenging for single combat. Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib went out to meet him.Hamza said, 'Siba, son of Umm Anmar, you son of the woman who circumcises females, do you defy Allah and His Messenger?' Then he charged at him, and Siba was gone like yesterday's dawn.I had hidden myself for Hamza behind a rock, waiting for him to pass by me. When he drew near, I hurled my spear at him, striking him in the lower abdomen so that it came out between his hips. That was the end of him. When the people returned, I returned with them, and I stayed in Mecca until Islam spread there. Then I left for Taif. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for me, and it was said to him, 'Messengers are not harmed.' So I went out with them until I came before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.When he saw me, he said, 'Are you Wahshi?'I said, 'Yes.'He said, 'You killed Hamza?'I said, 'It was as you have heard, Messenger of Allah.'He said, 'Can you keep your face hidden from me?'So I withdrew. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away and Musaylima the Liar came forth, I said, 'I will go out against Musaylima. Perhaps I will kill him and so make up for Hamza.'I went out with the people, and what happened to them happened. Then suddenly there was a man standing in a gap in a wall, looking like a dusty grey camel, his hair wild. I hurled my spear at him and struck him between his breasts so that it came out between his shoulder blades. A man from the Ansar then leapt at him and struck him on the crown of his head with a sword."Abdullah bin Fadl said, Sulayman bin Yasar told me that he heard Abdullah bin Umar say that a slave-girl on the roof of a house cried out, "The Commander of the Believers has been killed by the black slave!"
