Umar bin Khattab reported,

Umar said, "I agreed with my Lord in three matters," or "My Lord agreed with me in three matters."He said, "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, what if we took the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer?' So Allah revealed, 'And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer' [Baqarah 2:125].I also said, 'What if you screened your wives from view, for both the righteous and the wicked enter upon you?' So the verse of the veil was revealed."He continued, "Something reached me concerning the Mothers of the Believers, so I went to them one by one, telling each, 'Either you cease troubling the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, or Allah will replace you with wives better than you,' until I came to one of the Mothers of the Believers.She said, 'Umar, does the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not have what is needed to admonish his wives, that you must admonish them?'So I refrained. Then Allah revealed, 'Perhaps his Lord, if he divorces you, will replace you with wives better than you, submitting, believing, devoutly obedient' [Tahrim 66:5]."

حدثنا ابن أبي عدي عن حميد عن أنس قال

قال عمر

وافقت ربي عز وجل في ثلاث أو وافقني ربي في ثلاث قال قلت يا رسول الله لو اتخذت المقام مصلى قال فأنزل الله عز وجل {واتخذوا من مقام إبراهيم مصلى} وقلت لو حجبت عن أمهات المؤمنين فإنه يدخل عليك البر والفاجر فأنزلت آية الحجاب قال وبلغني عن أمهات المؤمنين شيء فاستقريتهن أقول لهن لتكفن عن رسول الله ﷺ أو ليبدلنه الله بكن أزواجا خيرا منكن مسلمات حتى أتيت على إحدى أمهات المؤمنين فقالت يا عمر أما في رسول الله ﷺ ما يعظ نساءه حتى تعظهن فكففت فأنزل الله عز وجل {عسى ربه إن طلقكن أن يبدله أزواجا خيرا منكن مسلمات مؤمنات قانتات} الآية
