I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing the colt of a mare of mine, and I said, "Muhammad, I have brought you the son of Qarha so that you may take him for yourself."He said, "I have no need of him. But if you wish, I will trade you for him your pick of the coats of mail taken at Badr."I said, "I would not trade him to you today for any piece of gear."He said, "Then I have no need of him." Then he said, "Dhul-Jawshan, will you not accept Islam and be among the first in this affair?"I said, "No."He asked, "Why not?"I said, "Because I have seen your own people set against you."He said, "But what has reached you about how they were struck down at Badr?"I said, "It has reached me."Then I said, "If you gain the upper hand over Makkah and settle in it, then perhaps."He said, "You may well live to see that."Then he said, "Bilal, take the man's saddlebag and provision him with dried dates." As I turned to leave, he said, "He is among the best of Banu Amir."By Allah, I was with my family in the lowlands when a rider came along. I asked, "Where have you come from?"He said, "From Makkah."I said, "What have the people done?"He said, "Muhammad ﷺ has taken it."I said, "May my mother be bereaved of me. By Allah, had I accepted Islam that day and then asked him for Hira, he would have granted it to me."
