I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing with me a young horse of mine. I said, "Muhammad, I have brought you the son of al-Arja so that you may take him."He replied, "I have no need for him. But if you wish, I can exchange him for some of the choicest armor taken at Badr."I said, "I would not exchange him today for any equipment."He said, "Then I have no need for him."Then he said, "Dhul-Jawshan, will you not accept Islam and be among the first of this affair?"I said, "No."He asked, "Why?"I said, "I have seen that your people are bent against you."He said, "How did news of their slaughter at Badr reach you?"I said, "It reached me."I then said, "If you conquer Mecca and settle there..."He said, "Perhaps if you live, you will see that."Then he said, "Bilal, take the man's saddlebag and provide him with provisions of ajwa dates."When I turned to leave, he said, "He is among the best of Banu Amir."By Allah, I was with my family at al-Ghawr when a rider came. I asked, "Where are you from?"He said, "From Mecca."I asked, "What have the people done?"He said, "Muhammad ﷺ has gained mastery over it."I said, "May my mother be bereft of me. By Allah, had I accepted Islam that day and then asked him for al-Hira, he would have granted it to me."
حدثنا عصام بن خالد حدثنا عيسى بن يونس بن أبي إسحاق الهمداني عن أبيه عن جده
أتيت النبي ﷺ بعد أن فرغ من أهل بدر بابن فرس لي فقلت يا محمد إني قد جئتك بابن العرجاء لتتخذه قال لا حاجة لي فيه ولكن إن شئت أن أقيضك به المختارة من دروع بدر فقلت ما كنت لأقيضك اليوم بعدة قال فلا حاجة لي فيه ثم قال يا ذا الجوشن ألا تسلم فتكون من أول هذا الأمر قلت لا قال لم قلت إني رأيت قومك قد ولعوا بك قال فكيف بلغك عن مصارعهم ببدر قال قلت بلغني قال قلت إن تغلب على مكة وتقطنها قال لعلك إن عشت أن ترى ذلك قال ثم قال يا بلال خذ حقيبة الرجل فزوده من العجوة فلما أن أدبرت قال أما إنه من خير بني عامر قال فوالله إني لبأهلي بالغور إذ أقبل راكب فقلت من أين قال من مكة فقلت ما فعل الناس قال قد غلب عليها محمد ﷺ قال قلت هبلتني أمي فوالله لو أسلم يومئذ ثم أسأله الحيرة لأقطعنيها
