The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a sermon one day and said, "Allah gave one of His servants the choice between living in this world as long as he wished and eating from it as he wished, and meeting his Lord
. He chose to meet his Lord."Abu Bakr
began to weep. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Are you not amazed at this old man? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentions a righteous man whose Lord
gave him the choice between this world and meeting his Lord
, and he chose to meet his Lord
, and this man weeps?"But Abu Bakr
was the most knowledgeable among them about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ meant.Abu Bakr
said, "Rather, we will ransom you with our wealth, our children, and our fathers."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one has been more generous to us with his companionship and his wealth than Ibn Abu Quhafa. Were I to take a close friend, I would have taken Ibn Abu Quhafa as my friend, but the bond and brotherhood of faith is enough, the bond and brotherhood of faith is enough," saying it twice. "Indeed, your companion is the beloved friend of Allah
."
Its isnad is daif due to the anonymity of Ibn Abu al-Mualla, while the rest of its narrators are well-known and reliable authorities, and Abdul-Malik is Ibn Umayr. However, Tirmidhi related it through the same route in the Book of Virtues, the virtues of Abu Bakr, 5/607, no. 3659, and he said, hasan gharib. This may support those who hold that when Tirmidhi says this, he means that the wording is hasan while the isnad is unusual, and that is indeed the case here. As for the wording, it is sahih, since Bukhari related it, 7/227, no. 3904 in Fath al-Bari, in the virtues of the Ansar, the migration of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions to Madinah, and Muslim, 4/1854, no. 2382, in the virtues of the companions, from the virtues of Abu Bakr.
