I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza, and my companions said to me, "You have spoken something dreadful." So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "My time in disbelief was recent, and I swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Say 'There is no god but Allah alone' three times, then spit lightly to your left three times, seek refuge in Allah, and do not do it again."
حدثنا يحيى بن آدم حدثنا إسرائيل عن أبي إسحاق
حلفت باللات والعزى فقال أصحابي قد قلت هجرا فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت إن العهد كان قريبا وإني حلفت باللات والعزى فقال رسول الله ﷺ قل لا إله إلا الله وحده ثلاثا ثم انفث عن يسارك ثلاثا وتعوذ ولا تعد
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Majah 1:330 narrated it in abbreviated form through Yahya bin Adam, and Nasai 2:140 narrated it through Zuhayr from Abu Ishaq, and also through Yunus bin Abu Ishaq from his father.Al-hajr, with a damma on the ha and a sakin on the jim, means obscene and foul speech. His statement, "the period was recent," means that it was close in time to his period of disbelief. This is clarified by his statement in the narration of Nasai, "We used to mention the matter while I was one whose acquaintance with pre-Islamic ignorance was recent."Then he spat lightly, spitting with the mouth resembles blowing, and it is lighter than spitting with saliva, since spitting with saliva always involves some moisture, and he was ordered to spit lightly in order to drive away Satan.The hadith will come again at 1622.
