I said to my father, "Father, you prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali here in Kufa for nearly five years. Did they perform the qunut?"He replied, "My son, it is an innovation."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. It is found in Tirmidhi 2/252, no. 2402, in the book of prayer, chapter on what has been said about abandoning qunut, where he said, hasan sahih. This does not mean that the practice of the innovator is impermissible. Rather, people used to perform qunut in that time, with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ present, because calamities and trials were widespread throughout the land. It is part of the sunnah to perform qunut during calamities and trials, as is established among the jurists, because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed qunut for a month, praying against Ril and Zakwan because they had killed seventy Muslims. Should we not perform qunut when hundreds of thousands of us continue to be killed? Those who express astonishment at the sunnah of qunut, especially in these days, are deaf, dumb, and blind, they do not understand and they are not guided. Whoever claims that the Hanafi does not perform qunut is ignorant of the fact that the Hanafis made it obligatory during calamities, and the entire nation is in consensus on this.
