Rubai bin Mura reported, "During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, throughout the rule of Abu Bakr, and at the beginning of Umar's rule, the drinker of wine would be brought to us, and we would stand up to him and strike him with our hands, sandals, and cloaks. This continued until the early part of Umar's rule, when he set the punishment at forty lashes. Then, when people became defiant and openly transgressed, he set it at eighty lashes."
حدثنا مكي بن إبراهيم حدثنا الجعيد عن يزيد بن خصيفة
كنا نؤتى بالشارب في عهد رسول الله ﷺ وفي إمرة أبي بكر وصدرا من إمرة عمر فنقوم إليه فنضربه بأيدينا ونعالنا وأرديتنا حتى كان صدرا من إمرة عمر فجلد فيها أربعين حتى إذا عتوا فيها وفسقوا جلد ثمانين
Its isnad is sahih. Makki bin Ibrahim is trustworthy and reliable, one of the teachers of Ahmad, and his hadith is found in the collections of all the six (al-jamaah). Humayd refers to Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman, who is also trustworthy, and his hadith is found in the collections of all the six. Yazid bin Abu Khusayfah is trustworthy and reliable, and his hadith is found in the collections of all the six.The hadith was narrated by Bukhari, 12/66, number 6779, Fath al-Bari, in the book of legal punishments, on striking with the hand and with sandals.
