The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit us at our home when I was a young boy. I was about to head out to play when my mother called, "Abdullah, come here, I'll give you something."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "What did you intend to give him?"She replied, "I was going to give him a date."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Had you not actually given him something, a lie would have been recorded against you."

أتانا رسول الله ﷺ في بيتنا وأنا صبي قال فذهبت أخرج لألعب فقالت أمي يا عبد الله تعال أعطك فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ وما أردت أن تعطيه قالت أعطيه تمرا قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ أما إنك لو لم تفعلي كتبت عليك كذبة
Its chain of transmission is daif, due to the anonymity of the freedman of Abdullah bin Amir. Bayhaqi named him Ziyad, but he remains unidentified since none of the scholars of biography and hadith mentioned him. Abu Dawud narrated it, 4/298, no. 4991, in the Book of Manners, chapter on the severity regarding lying, and Bayhaqi narrated it, 10/198-199, with two versions, once as the freedman of Abdullah bin Amir, and once without naming him. Bukhari likewise mentioned it in Tarikh al-Kabir, 5/11, from a freedman of Abdullah bin Amir.
