He had been a participant at Badr. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to send us out on military expeditions, my son, and we had no provisions except aged dates. He would distribute them to us by the handful, until it came down to a single date each."I said to him, "Father, what could a single date possibly do for you?"He replied, "Do not say that, my son. After we lost even that, we felt its absence sorely."
حدثنا يزيد أخبرنا المسعودي عن أبي بكر بن حفص بن عمر بن سعد بن أبي وقاص
وكان بدريا قال لقد كان رسول الله ﷺ يبعثنا في السرية يا بني ما لنا زاد إلا السلف من التمر فيقسمه قبضة قبضة حتى يصير إلى تمرة تمرة قال فقلت له يا أبت وما عسى أن تغني التمرة عنكم قال لا تقل ذلك يا بني فبعد أن فقدناها فاختللنا إليها
