Four verses were revealed concerning my father.My father said, "I came by a sword, so I said, 'Messenger of Allah, award it to me as spoils.'He said, 'Put it down.'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, award it to me. Am I to be treated like a man who is of no use?'He said, 'Put it back where you took it from.'"Then came down, "They ask you about the spoils of war" [Anfal 8:1]. He said that in Ibn Masud's recitation it likewise reads, "Say, the spoils of war."My mother said, "Has Allah not commanded you to maintain ties of kinship and to treat your parents well? By Allah, I will not eat any food nor drink any drink until you renounce Muhammad." So she would refuse to eat until they pried her mouth open with a stick and poured drink into it. Shuba said, "I think he said, 'and food as well.'" Then this was revealed, "And We have enjoined upon man concerning his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness" [Luqman 31:14], and he recited on until he reached, "of what you used to do."The Prophet ﷺ came in to visit me while I was ill, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?" He forbade me.I said, "Then half?"He said, "No."I said, "A third?"At that he fell silent, and so people have gone by that ever since.A man from the Ansar prepared some food, and they ate and drank until they became intoxicated from the wine. This was before wine was forbidden. We had gathered at his place, and they began boasting. The Ansar said, "The Ansar are better," and the Emigrants said, "The Emigrants are better." A man swung the jawbone of a camel at him and split his nose open, and Saad's nose remained split after that. Then this was revealed, "You who believe, wine and gambling..." down to His words, "So will you not then desist?" [Maidah 5:90–91].
حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن شعبة حدثني سماك بن حرب
أنزلت في أبي أربع آيات قال قال أبي أصبت سيفا قلت يا رسول الله نفلنيه قال ضعه قلت يا رسول الله نفلنيه أجعل كمن لا غناء له قال ضعه من حيث أخذته فنزلت يسألونك الأنفال قال وهي في قراءة ابن مسعود كذلك {قل الأنفال} وقالت أمي أليس الله يأمرك بصلة الرحم وبر الوالدين والله لا آكل طعاما ولا أشرب شرابا حتى تكفر بمحمد فكانت لا تأكل حتى يشجروا فمها بعصا فيصبوا فيه الشراب قال شعبة وأراه قال والطعام فأنزلت {ووصينا الإنسان بوالديه حملته أمه وهنا على وهن} وقرأ حتى بلغ {بما كنتم تعملون} ودخل علي النبي ﷺ وأنا مريض قلت يا رسول الله أوصي بمالي كله فنهاني قلت النصف قال لا قلت الثلث فسكت فأخذ الناس به وصنع رجل من الأنصار طعاما فأكلوا وشربوا وانتشوا من الخمر وذاك قبل أن تحرم فاجتمعنا عنده فتفاخروا وقالت الأنصار الأنصار خير وقالت المهاجرون المهاجرون خير فأهوى له رجل بلحيي جزور ففزر أنفه فكان أنف سعد مفزورا فنزلت {يا أيها الذين آمنوا إنما الخمر والميسر} إلى قوله {فهل أنتم منتهون}
