Someone said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "Tell me about things we used to do in the days of ignorance. We used to draw bad omens from things."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "That is something you may feel within yourself, but do not let it turn you back."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, we used to visit fortune-tellers."He answered, "Then do not visit fortune-tellers."
حدثنا حجاج حدثنا ليث عن عقيل عن ابن شهاب عن أبي سلمة بن عبد الرحمن بن عوف
لرسول الله ﷺ أرأيت أشياء كنا نفعلها في الجاهلية كنا نتطير قال رسول الله ﷺ ذلك شيء تجده في نفسك فلا يصدنك قال يا رسول الله كنا نأتي الكهان قال فلا تأت الكهان
Its isnad is sahih. Hajjaj is Ibn Muhammad Masissi, Layth is Ibn Saad, and Aqeel is Ibn Khalid Ayli, Abu Khalid Umawi, the trustworthy, precise, and reliable memorizer, well known and recognized, whose hadith is accepted by the whole community of scholars. Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf is known by this name and has no other, for his kunya is his actual name. He too is a trustworthy and prominent scholar. The hadith was recorded by Muslim, 4/1748, number 537, and it is a repetition of what appears in his book at 1/381, number 537.
