A man from Quraysh and I were managing the property of orphans. A certain man had previously taken a thousand dirhams from me unjustly. Then a thousand dirhams of his came into my possession.I said to the Qurayshi, "He took a thousand dirhams from me, and now I have come into a thousand dirhams of his."The Qurayshi replied, "My father told me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Return the trust to the one who entrusted you, and do not betray the one who betrayed you.'"
Its isnad is daif, due to the unidentified narrator between the father and the companion. As for this Yusuf, Abu Dawud and others named him as Ibn Mahik, and he is a trustworthy Makkan, but he did not specify the person he claims his father narrated from. However, the hadith has also come through the route of Abu Hurairah with a sahih and hasan isnad.Abu Dawud narrated it after this hadith of ours, from Ahmad bin Ibrahim and Muhammad bin Ala, from Talq bin Ghannam, from Sharik and Qays, from Abu Husayn, from Abu Salih, from him. See Sunan Abu Dawud 3/290, no. 3534, in the Book of Sales, chapter "A Man Taking His Due," and Tirmidhi 3/555, no. 1264, where he said, hasan gharib. He then quoted from the scholars that they permitted taking dirhams in place of dirhams, meaning, if someone's due was owed to him in dirhams, and dinars belonging to that due came into my possession, it is not permissible for me to withhold them except as dirhams.Darimi likewise narrated it, 2/243, no. 2697, as did Hakim, 2/46, who graded it sahih, while Dhahabi remained silent about it. Haythami graded it sahih, 4/145, through the route of Tabarani in Al-Kabir.
