When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, the tribe of Juhaynah came to him and said, "You have settled among us, so give us a pledge of security so that we may come to you and you may grant us safety." He gave them a pledge, and they accepted Islam. He said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out in the month of Rajab, and we were fewer than a hundred. He ordered us to raid a clan of Banu Kinanah who lived near Juhaynah. We raided them, but they were numerous, so we took refuge with Juhaynah. They protected us and said, "Why do you fight during the sacred month?"We replied, "We only fight those who expelled us from the sacred land during the sacred month."Then we said to one another, "What do you think we should do?"Some of us said, "Let us go to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and inform him."Others said, "No, rather let us stay here."I said, along with a group with me, "No, instead let us intercept the caravan of Quraysh and seize it." So we set out for the caravan. At that time the rule of war booty was that whoever took something kept it for himself. We headed for the caravan, while our companions went to the Prophet ﷺ and reported what had happened. He stood up angry, his face flushed, and said, "You went out from me together and came back scattered. Those before you were destroyed only by division. I shall send over you a man who is not the best among you, but the most patient of you in hunger and thirst." So he placed Abdullah bin Jahsh al-Asadi in command over us, and he was the first commander appointed in Islam.

Its chain is daif due to a break in transmission. Abdul-Mutaali bin Abdul-Wahhab Ansari, Hafiz gave his biography in Tahdhib 6/380, and mentioned that Husayni overlooked him among the narrators of the Musnad, thinking he was a different narrator, but Hafiz concluded that he was not. He also gave his biography in Tajil 264-265 and pointed to this hadith, mentioning that Abdullah bin Ahmad and Ibrahim bin Harith bin Musab also narrated from him, bringing the number of narrators from him to three, so as to establish thereby that he is not Abdul-Mutaal bin Talib bin Ibrahim Ansari. I did not find a biography of this Abdul-Mutaali bin Abdul-Wahhab in Jarh wa Tadil, nor in Tarikh Baghdad. Ibn Jawzi mentioned him in Manaqib Ahmad, page 46, among Ahmad's teachers, as follows, Abdul-Mutaal bin Abdul-Wahhab bin Ubayd bin Abu Qurra Baghdadi. I found in it neither criticism nor endorsement of him, but it is well known about Ahmad that he was selective about his teachers, and would only narrate from a trustworthy source.Mujalid is Ibn Saeed. Ziyad bin Alaqa, with a kasra on the ayn, a light lam, and a fatha on the qaf, bin Malik Thalabi, is trustworthy, but his report from Saad is missing a link. Ibn Abu Hatim said in Marasil, page 22, Abu Zura said, Ziyad bin Alaqa did not hear from Saad bin Abu Waqqas.Abdullah bin Ahmad did not hear this hadith from his father, but found it written in his father's own hand, and he heard it from Saeed bin Yahya bin Saeed Umawi, from his father Yahya. So he matched his father, the Imam, in the level of this narration, since there was one narrator between him and Yahya, just as there was between his father and Yahya.I did not find this hadith in any of the references except in this place, and except for Hafiz's reference to it in Tajil. Ghadbanan appears this way in the manuscripts, fully declined, and I could not find any justification for that. Then I found the hadith in Majma, volume 6, pages 66-67, where it was also attributed to Bazzar in abridged form. It likewise appears in Tarikh Ibn Kathir, volume 3, page 248, citing the Musnad, and it was also attributed to Bayhaqi in Dalail, who said, Then he narrated it through the report of Abu Usama, from Khalid, from Ziyad bin Alaqa, from Qutba bin Malik, from Saad bin Abu Waqqas, relating something similar. So he inserted Qutba bin Malik between Saad and Ziyad, and this is more fitting.
