I went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he entered a walled garden. He said to me, "Guard the gate for me."He went in and sat on the edge of the well, letting his legs hang down into it. Then someone knocked at the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He answered, "Abu Bakr."I said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Bakr."He said, "Let him in, and give him the glad tidings of Paradise."So I let him in and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the edge of the well, letting his legs hang down into it.Then there was another knock at the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He replied, "Umar."I said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Umar."He said, "Let him in, and give him the glad tidings of Paradise."So I let him in and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He entered and sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the edge of the well, letting his legs hang down into it.Then there was another knock at the gate.I asked, "Who is this?"He answered, "Uthman."I said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Uthman."He said, "Let him in, and give him the glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall him."So I let him in and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. He sat with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the edge of the well, letting his legs hang down into it.
